cMatrix10 / cMatrix12

computer-realized video and sound (2004 / 2009)

Perhaps there is something deeper to be changed in one's life than merely shifting the dramas with which one self-identifies.

cMatrix10 presents a mass of flowing particles and traceries of sound, sometimes forming diffuse clouds, other times coalescing into flowing lines of arcing motion. But no state is stable; transformation is constant. Dramas are purely localized, transient. One observes these dramas as they arise. And as they fall away. We see them as they are: temporary manifestations of an underlying, unfolding process.

cMatrix12 is three-channel, quadraphonic expansion of the original cMatrix10.

Technical Details

I created the cMatrix10 graphics algorithms in Java in the Processing environment and applied additional post-processing with Adobe AfterEffects. I exported point-location data from the algorithm to Common Music and Common Lisp Music for control of sound filtering processes, applied to the output of one of my Compressed Feedback Synthesis algorithms running in SuperCollider. I added additional sound layers using MAX/MSP and Digital Performer.

Presentation Details

Duration: 13 minutes (concert/screening version); 13 or 43 minutes (looping installation versions)

cMatrix10 was authored in Quicktime to NTSC standards, stereo. The work is best presented from a Quicktime H264 video file. It is available in DVD NTSC and DV NTSC formats, but the compression artifacts significantly alter the visual character of portions of the work.

cMatrix12 is authored for 3 1024x768 screens, for a total size of 3027x768. It is delivered via H264 compressed Quicktime, and requires a triple-output video divider mechanism (such as the Matrox TripleHead2Go).

The soundtrack is very delicate, so installation versions must be presented in locations that are sonically isolated.
